Re: Junk Food

I am currently hardcore addicted to roasted salted seaweed. It's all I want to eat lately. Which is crazy. After eating it, you don't feel more full really. But it does have a lot of fiber. And surprisingly less sodium than I would have expected. Still, definitely counts as junk food IMO.

Re: Junk Food

Serious Eats taste tested the three new customer submitted Lays flavors -- Chicken & Waffles, Cheesy Garlic Bread, and Sriracha.

http://www.seriouseats.com/2013/02/n...p_serious_eats

I would eat the shit out of the cheesy garlic bread ones, but if the Sriracha ones are like the buffalo wings ones I had in Canada, it's just too much.

I heard the Chicken & Waffle are just way too much. I want to try the sriracha and cheesy garlic bread though.

Re: Junk Food

I've had roasted chicken ones before, and they tasted a lot like OXO cubes. I don't think adding an Eggo flavor would make it better.

McDonalds Germany's "Los Wochos" Menu

McDonalds Germany's "Los Wochos" Menu

Right now, in Germany, Mickey D's is inexplicably celebrating Mexican food. Why, you ask? DON'T ASK THAT! DON'T EVER ASK THAT! But seriously, we have no idea. But we do know that they have a "Los Wochos" menu that they're promoting on the front page of the German McDonald's website, and it includes five gloriously tasty "Mexican" treats. And by "Mexican", we mean, "what a German told by an American on a cruise ship thinks Mexican food might taste like, if both of them had only ever lived in Holland."

Using our trusty Google Translate technology, we discovered that the copy on their site reads "If for ketchup salsa is spicy, from your best buddy Muchacho and a Burger Chili con Carne like you've never eaten it - then again in Germany, Los Wochos. Olé ... cker! But only for a short Tiempo." So... yeah, that didn't help, but who cares, just bring over your best buddy Muchacho and let's all take a look at each of these sexy totally, totally, TOTALLY Mexican treats:
(spoilered just for the sake of the size of this post)
Spoiler:

El Chili con Carne: The signature burger is described, via Google translate, as "juicy beef with beans and corn in a pan". And as you can see, it looks like this wasn't just a weird translation: they literally just stuck beans and corn in the patty. Because, you know, that's exactly how they make 'em in Mexico.

Spoiler:

1955 Burger: Clearly described as being for "the Herzhafticos among you", this is a spiced beef burger with tomato, lettuce, grilled onions and bacon, just like you might get in 1955 in Germany, when everything was totally chill and normal and there was definitely no sustained state of political and military tension between powers in the Western and Eastern Blocs. Also -- are "Herzhafticos" people who just want normal McDonalds food, and don't want to eat weird burgers with beans and corn stuck in the patty? Because if so, we kind of want to be "Herzhafticos".

Spoiler:

Chicken Fiesta: Compared to the others, this "spicy fiesta [that] awaits your palate" is basically a Mexican native. We're talking "tender breaded chicken meat with crunchy corn and one with cheddar cheese preparation, Mexico hot sauce and sour cream sauce". Suck on that, gringo "Herzhafticos" posers!

Spoiler:

Los Beefos: Seriously, German McDonalds? "Los Beefos"? Did your marketing team pick this name by watching that episode of Full House where Joey does his bit about Americans speaking Spanish by adding "o's" on the end of English words? Do people in Mexico really enjoy "juicy beef meatballs surrounded by a spicy breading"? Wait a sec… so...are these just beef McNuggets? Because that's actually kind of fantastic.

Spoiler:

Salsa Tomaten Sauce: We're pretty sure this is just salsa and tomato sauce.

Pulled pork. Mac and cheese. Cole slaw. Onion rings. Bacon. Reading this has given you high cholestorol.

This 1.5-pound sandwich will debut at Atlanta Falcons training camp, where it'll be on sale for all of $5, certainly making it one of the most calorie-efficient meals in the state of Georgia, which is saying something.

Attention, suckers who are still eating their chicken and waffles separately: Popeyes has seen the future, and it is their new Chicken Waffle Tenders. Consisting of waffle-battered deep fried chicken tenders, the dish is proof that the universe is beginning to collapse in on itself and will soon become a massive black hole. At least they come with french fries, a biscuit, and a honey maple dipping sauce.

AdAge reports that Popeyes was inspired by "the dietary habits of jazz musicians in Los Angeles during 1940s and 50s," which is oddly specific for a fast food LTO, but sure, why not. The ad below shows they're also inspired by a more modern aspect of the LA food scene: food trucks. It's unclear whether the tenders are available now: various Popeyes locations have displayed "Coming Soon" ads, and AdAge notes that the ad campaign for the tenders begins on July 29.

Re: Junk Food

Quote:
Extreme eating has hit the nation's state fairs, where vendors are one-upping the junk food competition with offerings like deep fried meatloaf and English Toffee Fudge Puppies.

America may be in an obesity crisis, but the demand for outrageous foods — cronuts, ramen burgers, Paula Deen-approved donut-hamburger sandwiches — shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, the public's fascination with bigger, greasier and more gargantuan foodstuffs has hit the nation's already-calorie-rich state fairs, those annual expos of Ferris Wheels, flume rides and deep-fried foods. In fact, according to today's Wall Street Journal, the demands of extreme eaters means that state fair vendors are feeling pressure to up their competitive junk food game—turning grassy fairgrounds into the gastronomic equivalents of the Island of Dr. Moreau.

"It's too bad because we lose a bit of heritage and a bit of who we are," Minnesota State Fair Vendor Dennis Larson tells the Journal's Caroline Porter, explaining that he and his colleagues are under constant pressure to create bigger, tastier, and more outrageous foods. "It used to just be cotton candy and caramel apples," vendor Mary Balducci added, echoing what David Foster Wallace, in his 1994 essay "Ticket to the Fair," described as a Bacchanalian food orgy with the sound of deep fryers forming "a grisly sound-carpet all up and down the paths."

But that was then and this is now, and if you think that what Foster Wallace described as "All-Butter Fudge" or "Dentist's Delight" sounds over the top, get a load of what's on offer in the country's (mostly Midwestern) precincts some two decades later.

NEW YORK — Call it the thin edge of the sandwich, or whatever else you like, but whatever you call it, this debate is separated by less than a third bun.

After all, what has two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions on a sesame bun? Burger King’s latest sandwich.

The Miami-based chain says it’s bringing back its “Big King” sandwich, which looks a lot like the popular Big Mac made by its bigger rival McDonald’s. Burger King says it’s an addition to the permanent menu rolling out this week. It’s not yet confirmed whether or not the three-bun burger war will extend into Canada’s fast-food turf, as neither McDonald’s Canada nor Burger King Canada commented immediately.

Burger King U.S.A. says it previously offered the Big King as a limited-time offer. But back then, it didn’t have the middle bun — a Big Mac hallmark — like it does now.
