Re: 50 Shades of Grey

I saw on the news while at the gym yesterday that certain libraries aren't stocking it. And the ones that are have them all checked out and there's a pretty big waiting list. Is it good?

i read the first one, not sure i will read the other two just yet. writing is pretty horrible and i found myself wanting the damn book to end already. the sex is decent though.

She started writing it after she finished reading Twilight and it started sorta as fan-fiction. I didn't know that when I first started reading 50 Shades and thought there were some similarities - awkward, clumsy girl with no experience with guys suddenly catches the eye of dark, mysterious, unworldy-hot rich guy and it turns out she's actually super hot herself... Similarities seem to end there. In Twilight she faints every time he kisses her on the lips. 50 Shades is much, much more (porno)graphic!

Re: 50 Shades of Grey

We considered adding to this our bookclub list but decided against it because the writing looked so terrible. Sorry Jack, couldn't find any rude bits on the net.

Quote:
Olivia leaps up and retrieves my jacket, which Grey takes from her before she can hand it to me. He holds it up and, feeling ridiculously self-conscious, I shrug it on. Grey places his hands for a moment on my shoulders. I gasp at the contact. If he notices my reaction, he gives nothing away. His long index finger presses the button summoning the elevator, and we stand waiting—awkwardly on my part, coolly self-possessed on his. The doors open, and I hurry in, desperate to escape. I really need to get out of here. When I turn to look at him, he’s gazing at me and leaning against the doorway beside the elevator with one hand on the wall. He really is very, very good-looking. It’s unnerving.

“Anastasia,” he says as a farewell.

“Christian,” I reply. And mercifully, the doors close.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey

the writing is terrible but the books are addictive. I went to Hawaii with 3 girlfriends last month and we were all somewhere in the midst of the trilogy. It was pretty much all we talked about all weekend, but mostly we were antisocial and just read the whole time!

This might win the worst sex writing award this year. And that is a real award.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey

I think I may be one of 10 females with no desire to read this book. I just don't get it. I think I'd be way too distracted by the writing to be able to take it seriously at all.

I don't know, I guess I just figure I have quite an imagination if any, shall we say, inspiration, is needed in that department.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey

Ms. Skanky is almost done with the book... mostly b/c everyone in the neighborhood is reading it. She said the writing and narrative was terrible, but the sex scenes were bad/good.

Sounds like erotica for people who think they're above reading porn and think because they're reading a "real book" they're not actively looking for masturbation fodder...

You love it... you sex cravers, you! Don't even try to pretend... perv it up...

I think that describes every romance novel.

It's not like this is the first one ever, I think this one just happens to be one of the most widely read, or at least talked about. I'd say probably now the generations of romance novel readers are just more vocal and less ashamed.

i can't remember the link, but it's an exact copy of a fanfic the author of Grey wrote, and it's like they went into Word, and used "Find & Replace" to change the names from Twilight characters to the ones in the story.

We're talking duplicates of exact whole paragraphs multiple times between the original fanfic and the commercial book.

Probably true... I worked in used book store where people worked through hundreds of romance books a week (but there's usually only about 4-5 sex scenes per book, and no bondage). Then there's all the Harlequins, etc. which really don't have any sex... just babies and asexual faithful men... stability porn. They used to be called "historical" novels, now more of them are "paranormal" in theme.

Old perv dudes bought westerns... if you ever want a laugh:
1. go to a used paperback store.
2. find the Western section.
3. find a series called "Spur" and pick any one of them
4. balance the book on its spine in your palm and see where it naturally opens....
5. enjoy the cowboy sex
