Re: 50 Shades of Grey

Is there bondage in 50 shades? And is it paranormal, too? Jeez. Then it makes sense that it's fancy published twilight fanfic.

We're talking duplicates of exact whole paragraphs multiple times between the original fanfic and the commercial book.
hmm I'm finding this hard to believe. I've only read 1/3 of the Twilight trilogy and 2 1/2 of the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy, but I've seen nothing even close to that similar. I mean she'd get her ass sued if she was making millions off of that kind of plagiarism.

lots of bondage and "kinky fuckery" as the book calls it. Nothing paranormal.

Supposedly this began as Twilight oriented fan fiction... but I don't think this is paranormal.

You all know how much I loooove fan fiction...

naw, naw. not from Twilight.

The person who wrote Grey wrote it originally as a Twilight fan fiction. Then when there was money to be made, took her original fan fiction and changed all the names.

Not that she just recycled Twilight. that'd be a pretty ballsy move.

i'll see if i can find the link. it's lost in the depths of my Tumblr dashboard.

Was the hype around the trilogy what caused you to read them, or have you read romance/erotic novels before? I'm trying to figure out if the former is true for most.

I think the former would be true for most, myself included. I first heard about it back in early March from a girl I didn't know well (we were both in Costa Rica for a wedding) who happened to be reading it and mentioned that it was this new sensation, but didn't go into any detail. So I looked it up on Amazon, read the synopsis, and thought "no way." Then in mid-April two other friends who I'm much closer with told me they were reading it and how they couldn't put it down / "it's straight up porn!" / "Liam has been loving it that I'm reading this book!" / "you'll need to be near your top drawer when you read this" - and I decided to buy it based on their recommendations

I've never read any even remotely erotic fiction books before this.

there's a bit more of that in the 2nd and 3rd books. after all, the main character's a virgin when the trilogy starts... they gotta take it slooooooooow.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey

Quote:
Peak Fifty Shades Is Now. Do you want to sleep on Fifty Shades of Grey sheets? You are in a tremendous amount of luck. The book everyone is talking, talking, for the love of God will not stop talking about, is about to go big-merch. Caroline Mickler Limited has been appointed the "master licensing agent" for the novel, which means, per a release from the company, we can expect things like Fifty-Shades-branded "lingerie/sleepwear, apparel, fragrances, beauty products, bedding, home furnishings, stationery, jewelry and adult products.” And rope, right? Rope? LicensingBookOnline reports that the main demographic for these items will be adult women, but, maybe, men too, "buying gifts." With this and talk of the upcoming movie ringing painfully in everybody's ears, we have to get fully sick of talking about this book soon...right? Rope?

Would you or your friends read more now? I would think erotic fiction would see a bump in sales from this, since it sounds like it would do wonders for couples in bed (or singles, for that matter ). There always appeared to be a taboo with reading erotic fiction, but this might have made it more acceptable. Maybe a bump in sex toys and bondage gear sales too? Economic stimulus by way of personal stimulus!

Honestly, I don't think so, unless something else drew this kind of hype and personal recommendations. As I'm making my way through the third book the initial thrill has sorta worn off and the crappy writing, lame(ish) plot, and repetitive descriptions used for the sex scenes (and everything else) has gotten a bit boring. I'm honestly more interested in finding out how the dumb plot ends at this point than I am in the sex passages or the couple's relationship. In the first book, the relationship at least interested me somewhat, but now it's extremely repetitive and predictable: they have a dumb argument and then revenge and/or makeup sex. Rinse. Repeat.

Point being, I think I got into the first book largely because the "erotic fiction" aspect was so new/different, but now that the thrill's worn off this sort of writing doesn't seem exciting anymore.

But I think plenty of other women might fulfill your prophecy, Hilde.

I've read Lady Chatterley's Lover (which I didn't actually think was very good), but that's the closest I've gotten to anything like this.
