Re: OK, please recommend some alternative music

Seen some cool suggestions here - agree with whoever said The War on Drugs (like Dylan singing with an ambient rock band) and Kurt Vile (who actually used to be a member of War on Drugs, I think)

Brian Fallon - 2 solo albums, plus his work with the Gaslight Anthem and Horrible Crowes
John Moreland - great songwriter and fantastic voice, really good country artist
Mac Demarco - no huge similarity but worth a mention, I dig him, one of the more successful modern day singer-songwriters
Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown - recently discovered this band after being a big fan of their frontman, who’s one of the most talented guitarists around at the minute. Great heavy blues rock
You’ve got your classics like Springsteen, Young, Dylan and Petty
Honourable mention to Train’s self titled debut, if you like Ryan’s music you’ll like it, it’s cool

The Decemberists are my second love.

Beautiful lyrics and incredible musicianship.

I didn't like SFMSTD. I know it was incomplete at his time of death but nothing matches Grace.

Yeah I figured everyone had heard or was familiar enough with Grace which is why I mentioned Sketches... specifically and it's certainly not better than Grace but has some great tunes on there. But yes it's definitely very uneven and has some forgettable ones as well. Vancouver and Morning Theft are the standouts to me though...

Re: OK, please recommend some alternative music

Here are some albums that I love:

Land of Talk - Cloak and Cipher
The Kills - Midnight Boom
Deep Sea Diver - Secrets
The Replacements - Let It Be
Kathleen Edwards - Back To Me
Red House Painters - Songs for a Blue Guitar
Jason Collett - Idols of Exile
Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Gentle Highway
Stevie Nicks - Bella Donna
Middle Brother - S/T (members of Deer Tick, Dawes, Delta Spirit)
Nick Drake - Bryter Layter; Pink Moon

and if you're interested in stuff that specifically influenced Ryan's sound in more recent years to fill the void of S/T, 1989, Prisoner/B-Sides, you'll find shades of those in these:

The Cure - Disintegration
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Bruce Springsteen - Tunnel of Love
Til Tuesday (Aimee Mann's former band) - Welcome Home (never referenced by Ryan that I'm aware of, but he might as well be playing guitar on "What About Love")

No there arenít others. Only the one which was completely fabricated by someone who had never met him.

I feel pretty bad for Conor having to live with that, he went through a pretty tough time just after it and you know even though thereís no doubt that there was no truth to it there will always be folks who heard the allegation but didnít hear the truth of the matter so heíll be forever tarnished in some respects. He stressed afterwards that the vast majority of rape complaints are genuine and he didnít want anyone using his case to cast doubt onto brave women who come forward.

You just know that if he were shady that there would have been other accounts that came out around that time (as thatís what almost always happens - creeps dong just creep the one time). The fact that nobody else came forward with anything bad to say about him says all I need to know. I doubt that Phoebe would have started a band with him after her experience with Ryan if she didnít feel 100% comfortable with him.

Just glad that I can still listen to one of my two favourite songwriters.

Tedeschi Trucks Band has a new record coming out, and so does Ryan Bingham. I haven't bonded with Ryan Bingham's last couple, but maybe I'll check this one out.

I enjoy that Dead Sea Diver record. Saw them live in a small room and was very impressed.

Have you heard Traveling On which is the ep of outtakes from Ill Be Your Girl.Sure would have improved that album if they ditched We All Die Young and Everything Is Awful and replaced them with Down On The Knuckle and I Will Not Say Your Name. While they were at it they should have used the ep version of Tripping Along.Inexplicable decisions.

?

I think it's more that now that a large portion of people's music libraries are now likely taboo and/or difficult to listen to now after this and are looking for more new music to replace it...

Re: OK, please recommend some alternative music

The Butchers And The Builders. Largely acoustic, but with a great, loose style and excellent use of percussion and dynamics such that they can holler and rock. Such a sense of heat and sweat and desperation. Really recommend giving them a listen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrjwa8r9ClY - for what can be weaved with a beat and a voice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdesVXs7lxg - a great unmic'd performance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzDqCcTeSmY

Those three are from the first album. These two are from the fourth, letting in a proper drumkit and splashes of electric guitar, but still doing what they do.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zd-XpVCPbPg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1mmX_8AZQE - my favourite, I think. Fucking gorgeous.

I think that DRA's albums are maybe 1% of my music collection, maybe I was being naive in thinking that many other would be similar (maybe, 5 or 10%, not over 50)
