"Sell this out or I quit. Love you."

"If it doesn't sell out today I'm cancelling the US tour. Love you. "

LOVE YOU

He deleted it but he posted this the day before the NYT story broke. Literally an ultimatum and a threat to do harm if he doesn't get what he wants (in this case money).

Seriously. Fuck this guy. Feel free (some of you) to find some halfass excuse for this shit.

"Sell this out or I quit. Love you."

This was totally meant as a joke. Not particularly funny, but the “love you” I believe shows that.
People online have been suggesting that he may have known this expose article was forthcoming hence some of the strange behavior. This post about selling out the tour makes me believe it was a last minute surprise to him. Why would anyone joking or not want a tour to sell out if in a day or so later an article is to come out that would arguably ruin your career and have said tour cancelled/refunded and album canned? Is very strange.

He knew it was coming. He was tweeting about it before sunrise the day it released. I’m sure the NYT contacted his lawyer for comment a day or two before.

Exactly... so a tweet asking for a tour to sell out a day or so beforehand doesn’t make much sense for a guy who may know he’s career is about to go down the pan!

You’re trying to apply sound logic to a man in panic mode. It wasn’t a joke. He was freaking out in the comments, he freaked out during his livestream right before that post. He edited the caption multiple times. He was freaked out and pulling the same manipulation by threat crap that he used on women.

He started getting aggitated, picked up a test pressing of “Big Colors”, kept flipping it off, tossed it aside and who said who gives a shit.

I’d say that means he knew it’s was coming.

Don’t forget he also tweeted a threat at the NYT to basically “bring it on”

Re: "Sell this out or I quit. Love you."

a friend in the music business (who knows some people in common) knew about the article a week or so in advance, and probably folks closer to the fire knew before that. no way ryan was surprised. the *actual date* of publication might've only been communicated at the last-ish minute, but he was not blindsided.

Oh yeah, he was acting so bizarre that day. It seemed like he was definitely on a substance or two. Then he watched house hunters or something and talked to the tv for like 15 minutes.

Anyone know if that stream is still up online somewhere? Someone has posted a few of the live Instagram streams up on YouTube from the end of Jan but I’d be intrigued to see the one you’ve mentioned above.

Re: "Sell this out or I quit. Love you."

It blows my mind that he was on instagram live streams and all sorts of other shit and didn't just spill the beans on the story then. It would've been very much like him to just start rambling about this article that was going to come out that's bullshit, etc. etc.

He could've also tried to get out in front of it in some sort of semi-classy way, preemptively talking about his regrets and need for improvement.

It's bizarre that he knew about it and didn't say anything but also didn't just go into hiding completely and instead dicked around on instagram talking about tv shows while having miniature anxiety induced meltdowns.

The logic of the original tweet is also ridiculous. He's punishing fans in the UK for not selling out shows by...canceling shows in other countries? Is he really so far gone that he expected people in the US to buy tickets they'd never use to guarantee that Ryan Adams would play shows stateside? Who does he think he is, the Stones?

I can't believe that nobody's pointed out yet how ridiculous he was to suggest that he'd be playing MSG either.

Maybe his relapse was caused by knowledge of this article coming out?

I wonder if he knew this story was going to break and just wanted to throw that out there so he could one day say "if not for that scandal, I would've been playing MSG in the summer."

Ryan and his attorney were well prepared for the release of the article.
