I thought I would start an official thread with some photos I took today while walking around the gardens. That place is amazing. Wonderful surrounds for this type of show. Walked around Ryan's bus for a moment hoping to hear some tunes but no go. Anyway, should be a fun show. I'll post some pics later tonight.

Re: Red Butte Garden, SLC UT. 07-31-2007

Good show for the most part. A beautiful evening in Salt Lake City with the weather holding up, but still a windy night for The Cards. The show started out fairly low key, opening with "Games" and then falling into a nice "Please Do Not Let Me Go." Ryan seemed a bit off on the sound so he switched to an electric guitar which he played for the reminder of the night. "OMG" had some sound issues with some feedback that seemed to annoy Ryan. At one point he grabbed his ears and jolted back off his stool as the shriek blasted him in the ear. "Let It Ride" was played in a nice medium pace with more of a studio sound than recent versions. "What Sin" was where RA&C seemed to pick up the momentum with the band really getting into a nice groove. "Peaceful Valley" was a real treat as Ryan hit the vocals to perfection, and the jam they segued into was experimental yet polished. Ryan made a few comments to someone in to audience about yelling "Let's go!" over and over. Ryan asked him "where are we going?" After "Blue Hotel" Ryan made another comment to the same guy and apologized for not going faster. After Mockingbird, the band just rolled through each song as if they were on a mission to get the set finished as soon as possible. A highlight of the evening came with "Goodnight Rose" as the band went with some slower pacing and progressed into some nice interplay to extend certain sections. The show closed out with a tight "Easy Plateau" that could not have been more spot on if I wanted it to be. Ryan & the Cardinals left the stage after exclaiming "It was wonderful playing for you people tonight," not returning for an encore. All in all a great night to be alive. That's the quick and short of it.

I got there late so my pics kind of suck. I was at the side of the stage with a bit of an obstructed view. Here's some pics anyway.

tsarpa is not a happy customer:

Quote:
Ryan Adam's Salt Lake concert was one of the the worst I have ever seen. A couple thousand people wanting to enjoy the music and have fun and he and his band decided to take the night off and become background for everyone'sconversation. Pathetic and a complete theft of our money! Love his music but from the start he sat on his ass, didn't say boo to the crowd, played a straight forward low key set and left after 90 minutes. Bullshit! Come on, learn to entertain or be stuck in the 3rd tier forever. The angry, bad boy shit only goes so far and then it becomes "what have you done for me lately". I should have bought a $40 bottle of wine and watched Austin City Limits. Much more entertaining. Ryan Adams should give everyone in SLC a refund.

Re: Red Butte Garden, SLC UT. 07-31-2007

Well, I think thats a bit harsh, but not completely out of line. Ryan did seem preoccupied most of the night as well as a bit ornery. The crowd was very low key but what do you want from a Blue Cave type show (although this one seemed to be a Green Cave show if there is such a thing)? The sound was off because of the high winds, and I think the mix may have been sloppy as well. I still thought the night brought some nice moments and all in all being at Red Butte was better than being at home. I'm hoping for better in CO.!

Nice review bcart. I'm sure for some folks it's disappointing when he doesn't talk or "connect" with the audience but I saw him at Koko when he didn't talk either but it was still a brilliant show. Sometimes we forget that first and foremost he's a musician not a stand up comic. He's also pissy and moody and that's just the way he is.

Re: Red Butte Garden, SLC UT. 07-31-2007

Dear Ryan Adams,
You owe me 40 dollars. Here's why: Your concert last night was some bullshit. Pull that at a real venue like Red Rocks, and it'd probably be the last show you ever played. Was it the middle-aged wino crowd that got to you? Was it the fact that your show was infact background music many peoples' Tuesday night out? As a talented and accomplished performer, of all people you should be aware that probably 80% of people who go to outdoor summer shows are going because it's something to do, an event to be seen at, and an event where people can socialize and make half-hearted plans of "i'll call you soon" with old aquaintences, not to really hear you play. Your arrogance supercedes your talent, and while I'm sure it's annoying to have people hollering at you while you play, or hollering at eachother while you play, it is insulting to the crowd, and especially those who came for the music to not get an encore. Regardless of the reasons why you decided that we weren't worth an encore, you should still give me my $40 so that I can use it wisely, like purchasing dave matthew's band tickets. Come back to salt lake soon, ok?

Re: Red Butte Garden, SLC UT. 07-31-2007

review from the Salt Lake City Tribune:

Quote:
Review: Aloof Adams proves a disappointment

By Dan Nailen
The Salt Lake Tribune

The best concerts are a symbiotic relationship between artist and audience, with each side pushing each other to ever greater heights during the course of the show.
Tuesday at Red Butte Garden, the audience was ready to hold up its end of the bargain, but the same can't be said for headliner Ryan Adams. The alt-country icon and former Whiskeytown leader seemed more interested in exiting the stage as quickly as possible after the show hit the 90-minute mark than in rewarding Utah fans who have waited nearly a decade for a solo Adams show (not counting that inexplicable 30-minute gig opening for Alanis Morissette at the E Center a few years back).
Keeping his sunglasses on even after darkness fell, Adams rarely spoke to the crowd. One exception was when a fan in front yelled "Let's go!" and Adams responded, clearly annoyed, "Where do you want to take me? Am I not playing the songs fast enough for you?" Another exception was Adams' seemingly snide exit line: "It was real exciting playing for you here tonight." Then the house lights lit up the venue and The Clash came on the loud speakers before Adams' band could even get off the stage, marking a remarkably abrupt end to an unsatisfying show.
In between, there were certainly moments of brilliance that you would expect from one of America's best young songwriters. And the audience greeted Adams and his band, The Cardinals, with open arms as they took the stage and
settled into a semicircle alignment for the night.
The 17-song set list focused on songs from "Cold Roses," "Jacksonville City Nights" and the new "Easy Tiger," and Adams' band proved themselves stellar players and singers throughout. Jon Graboff's pedal-steel and Jamie Candioro's piano were prominent parts of each song, and guitarist Neal Casal's sweet falsetto was invaluable when he harmonized with Adams on "Wild Flowers" and "Oh My God, Whatever, Etc."
"Let It Ride," "Magnolia Mountain," "Cold Roses" and "Easy Plateau," all from the "Cold Roses" album, were all highlights, even if the band veered dangerously close to jam-band wankery at times. "Dear John" and "A Kiss Before I Go," both from "Jacksonville City Nights," offered some of the most straightforward country of the night, and the new "Goodnight Rose" sounded great. The show seemed to pick up momentum from the half-way point on, and the crowd reacted in kind, standing up and shouting encouragement to the band. That just made Adams' quick exit at the end of "Easy Plateau" all the more frustrating.
nailen@sltrib.com

* WHERE: Red Butte Garden
* WHEN: Tuesday
* BOTTOM LINE: The mercurial performer delivered 90 minutes of low-key country-rock, a lot of attitude, few words and a quick exit.

say whatever you'd like. but at the end of the day, take a look at who plays a better show. isn't half the battle pleasing the crowd? now i believe it is your turn to go please the crowd, if you follow.
p.s. i'm still waiting for my $40.
